🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)
A minister becomes king
In about 73/72 BCE the Shunga king Devabhuti was killed in a palace plot organised by his minister (amatya) Vasudeva. Vasudeva took the throne of Magadha and founded the Kanva dynasty, which the Puranas call the Kanvayanas. Like the Shungas, the Kanvas were Brahmanas, said to belong to the Kanva gotra.
Bana’s Harshacharita says the pleasure-loving Devabhuti was killed by a slave girl (the daughter of a maid) disguised as his queen, at the instigation of his minister Vasudeva. The story shows how weak the last Shunga had become and how much power ministers held.
- c. 73/72 BCE: minister Vasudeva has Devabhuti killed (Harshacharita) and founds the Kanva dynasty.
- Kanvas = Kanvayanas, Brahmanas; ruled Magadha.
- Question: Whom did Vasudeva serve before becoming king? Answer: Devabhuti, the last Shunga.

Brahmana ministers turned kings
The Puranas call the Kanvas “Shunga-bhrityas” — servants of the Shungas. Historians read this in two ways:
| View | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Former servants | They had been ministers of the Shungas before seizing power — the plain meaning |
| Ministers behind puppet kings | Some scholars suggest the Kanvas ruled in Magadha while minor Shunga princes kept a nominal crown, especially around Vidisha |
- Puranas (Matsya, Vayu, Brahmanda, Vishnu, Bhagavata) — names and reign lengths.
- Harshacharita — the manner of Devabhuti’s death.
- Coins — copper coins reading “Bhumimitra” are claimed by some for the second Kanva king, but most numismatists assign them to a local Mitra ruler of Panchala.
- No Kanva inscription has yet been found — this is why the dynasty is so obscure.
- “Shunga-bhritya” = servants of the Shungas; possible puppet Shungas at Vidisha.
- Sources: Puranas, Harshacharita; no Kanva inscription; “Bhumimitra” coins debated.
- Question: What do the Puranas call the Kanvas? Answer: Kanvayanas / Shunga-bhrityas.
