Concept
8.11 Chanakya, Chandragupta and the fall
🏫 School level · NCERT Class 6–12 History (the base for UPSC, BPSC, BSSC and other PSC exams)
The end of the Nanda dynasty
Dhana Nanda’s greed, heavy taxes and low-birth stigma made him unpopular. Literary traditions — Buddhist (Mahavamsa-tika), Jain (Hemachandra’s Parishishtaparvan) and Sanskrit drama (Vishakhadatta’s Mudrarakshasa) — tell how a Brahmin, Chanakya (Kautilya, Vishnugupta), insulted at the Nanda court, swore to destroy the dynasty and raised Chandragupta Maurya to the throne in about 322/321 BCE.
Buddhist and Jain stories say that after the first failure, Chanakya and Chandragupta overheard a mother scolding her child, who had burnt his fingers by putting them into the middle of a hot dish: “You are like Chandragupta — eat from the edges first!” They then conquered the frontier regions before attacking Pataliputra.
- Chanakya (Kautilya/Vishnugupta), insulted by Dhana Nanda, raised Chandragupta; c. 322/321 BCE.
- Hot-dish lesson: conquer the frontier first.
- Question: Who overthrew Dhana Nanda? Answer: Chandragupta Maurya with Chanakya.

From the Nandas to the Mauryas
| Cause | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Unpopularity | Heavy taxes and greed; Greek writers say Agrammes was hated |
| Social prejudice | Brahmanical hostility to a “Shudra” dynasty |
| Able opponents | Chanakya’s strategy and Chandragupta’s leadership |
| North-west turmoil | After Alexander, frontier peoples and soldiers were available as allies |
- First large empire of north India, from the Beas to Kalinga.
- Centralised administration: standing army, treasury, taxes, standard measures — inherited by the Mauryas.
- Public works: canals (Hathigumpha).
- Social change: a non-Kshatriya imperial dynasty.
- Learning: Pataliputra as a centre of scholars (Varsha, Upavarsha, Vararuchi).
Hemachandra’s Parishishtaparvan says the defeated Nanda was allowed to leave Pataliputra with as much as he could carry in a single chariot, and that his daughter chose to marry Chandragupta. The Mudrarakshasa focuses instead on Chanakya winning over the loyal Nanda minister Rakshasa to serve the new king.
- Causes: unpopularity, prejudice, able opponents, north-west turmoil.
- Legacy: first north Indian empire, centralised machinery, canals, social change.
- Question: Who was Rakshasa? Answer: The loyal Nanda minister won over by Chanakya.
