Accession, war and conversion

Ashoka (c. 268โ€“232 BCE), son of Bindusara, had been viceroy at Ujjayini and was sent to quell a revolt at Taxila. In his edicts he calls himself Devanampiya Piyadasi โ€” โ€œbeloved of the gods, of gracious lookโ€. His personal name โ€œAshokaโ€ appears only in a few minor rock edicts.

๐Ÿ“– Rock Edict XIII โ€” Ashokaโ€™s remorse

โ€œWhen he had been consecrated eight years, the Beloved of the Gods conquered Kalinga. 150,000 people were deported, 100,000 were killed and many times that number perishedโ€ฆ Afterwards the Beloved of the Gods felt deep remorse.โ€ From then on he chose dhamma-vijaya (conquest by dhamma) over conquest by war โ€” but he also warned the forest peoples (atavikas) that he still had power.

WHO BROUGHT ASHOKA TO BUDDHISM?
TraditionMonk
Northern (Divyavadana / Ashokavadana)Upagupta of Mathura
Sri Lankan (Dipavamsa, Mahavamsa)The novice Nigrodha, Ashokaโ€™s nephew
๐Ÿ”ฌ Was it a sudden conversion? (latest view)

Minor Rock Edict I says Ashoka was a lay follower (upasaka) for over two and a half years without much zeal, and only then โ€œwent to the Sanghaโ€ and became zealous. Historians (Thapar, Olivelle, Nayanjot Lahiriโ€™s Ashoka in Ancient India, 2015) see a gradual change, with the Kalinga war as a turning point rather than a single moment.

โญ Key Points
  • Ashoka (c. 268โ€“232 BCE) = Devanampiya Piyadasi; Kalinga in 8th year (RE XIII).
  • Initiated by Upagupta (northern) or Nigrodha (Sri Lankan); gradual change (MRE I).
๐Ÿ“Œ One-line Q&A
  • Question: How many were killed in Kalinga? Answer: 100,000 (150,000 deported).
