Module 5: Major Generating Units & Greenfield Thermal Power Projects
Major power generation units in Bihar are operated or supported through the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC):
- Barauni Thermal Power Station (BTPS): Located in Begusarai. Out of 7 original units, 5 have completed their operational lifespan and were retired. Renovation and modernization of the remaining two units of 110 MW each is in progress, along with the construction of two new commercial units of 250 MW each.
- Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Limited (KBUNL): Located in Muzaffarpur, KBUNL is a joint venture between NTPC and BSPGCL with an equity sharing ratio of 65:35. It features two operational units of 110 MW each, and two units of 195 MW each have been constructed.
- Kosi Hydel Power Station (KHPS): Located at Kataiya (Birpur), KHPS has 4 units of 4.8 MW each. Commissioned between 1970 and 1978, it was transferred to the Bihar State Hydroelectric Power Corporation (BSHPC) in November 2003.
- Nabinagar Stage-I Plant: Located in Aurangabad district; construction of three supercritical units of 660 MW each (total 1,980 MW) is underway.
- Three Greenfield Thermal Projects under Bilateral MoUs:
- Chausa (Buxar): 2 units of 660 MW each (1,320 MW) executed with Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN).
- Kajra (Lakhisarai): Greenfield thermal plant of 660 MW partnered with NTPC.
- Pirpainti (Bhagalpur): Greenfield thermal plant of 660 MW partnered with NHPC.
- Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP), Banka: An upcoming 4,000 MW mega power project on 2,500 acres of land. The Ministry of Coal allotted the Barhat and Dhulia Nala Coal Blocks for this project, with 2,000 MW power dedicated to Bihar.
