Module 6: Power Transmission & Distribution Infrastructure
Power Transmission Network:
A well-planned intra-state and inter-state transmission system links generating stations with distribution load centers to ensure cost-effective, uninterrupted electricity delivery. At present, the transmission system in Bihar managed by BSPTCL comprises:
- 16,857 circuit km of Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines.
- 152 Grid Sub-stations (GSS) spread across the state.
- Total transformation capacity of 9,620 MVA.
Power Distribution Network & Operations:
Distribution is the revenue-generating arm of the power supply chain. Bihar is served by two distribution utilities: North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL), catering to an aggregate consumer base of approximately 159 lakhs.
Loss Reduction & System Modernization:
- Rapid rural electrification resulted in high Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses.
- To curtail losses, the DISCOMs introduced comprehensive billing improvements, electronic collections, and energy accounting and auditing across distribution transformers (DTRs) and 11 kV feeders.
- 16,857 circuit km of Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines.
- 152 Grid Sub-stations (GSS) spread across the state.
- Total transformation capacity of 9,620 MVA.
