Urban local bodies, missions and the 2011 slum count

These questions read urban Bihar as three facts that have to stay together. The first is how urban the two halves of the state were in 2011. The second is the split of the 142 urban local bodies. The third is the town, year or agency attached to each mission and park.

Census 2011 places urbanisation at 7.7 percent in North Bihar and 17.4 percent in South Bihar. The state figure used with the census trend in this chapter is about 11.3 percent. Slums were reported from 85 towns. That slum population was 10.52 percent of Bihar's urban population, and Bihar's slum population was 1.89 percent of India's slum population.

The count of urban local bodies is 142: 13 municipal corporations, 49 nagar parishads and 81 nagar panchayats. Katihar and Purnea were the first two towns to finish a property survey with a unique house number and a number plate.

Figure: 142 local bodies, and urbanisation in the two halves

The longer bar is the larger share. Nagar panchayats are the biggest group of local bodies, and South Bihar is the more urban half.
