Subtopic 2.1: Son Barrage at Indrapuri

  • The Son enters Bihar from the north-eastern slopes of the Vindhyan hills; near Dehri its catchment is about 26,608 sq miles.
  • The first anicut on the Son was built at Dehri (printed as 1968-74; historically 1868-74). It fed canals for rabi irrigation in Bhojpur, Rohtas, Gaya, Aurangabad and Patna.
  • Later a new, very strong barrage was built at Indrapuri, about 12 km south of the first anicut. Though the river is very wide here (printed as 3,81,000 m), the barrage was kept only 1412 m wide.
  • The barrage has 59 slipways and 8 underground sluiceways on the left and 4 underground sluiceways on the right, plus a 6.7 m wide road.
  • It supplies the West and East Son canals and also provides inland transport on the Son canals.
