Subtopic 5.1: Southern marginal plateau

  • South of the Ganga plain, the exposed Chotanagpur plateau shows old rocks: gneiss, schist and granite (Archean).
  • This is a region of fast-flowing streams, steep slopes, hills, level active valleys and uneven terrain. It includes the hills of Gaya, Mandar, Barabar, Jethian, Rajgir, Gangeshwari and Sheikhpura (hog-back ridges), Biharsharif, Jamalpur, Munger and the Kaimur plateau of Rohtas and Kaimur districts.
  • Ridges of quartzite from Navinagar and Moratal to Munger stand like hogbacks (sukar peeth).
  • Together the eroded Chotanagpur and Kaimur plateaus make land about 150–300 m high.
  • The Son river separates the Kaimur plateau from the Chotanagpur plateau.
  • In Chotanagpur's northern border area there are Archean, gneiss and granite; the Kaimur plateau has sandstone.
