Module 1: Muzaffarpur Bomb Case (1908) - Background & Incident
Concept
Subtopic 1.1: Kingsford, the Anushilan Samiti and the Night of 30 April 1908
In the early 20th century Bihar emerged as an important centre of revolutionary activity. Douglas Kingsford, the harsh Presidency Magistrate of Calcutta, had inflicted inhuman punishments on freedom fighters. To shield him from the revolutionaries, the British government transferred him to Muzaffarpur as Sessions Judge.
The Anushilan Samiti of Bengal entrusted the task of assassinating Kingsford to two young men, Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki. On the night of 30 April 1908, as a carriage came out of the Muzaffarpur Club, the two threw a bomb at it, believing it to be Kingsford’s. Kingsford was not inside; the carriage carried the wife and daughter of barrister Pringle Kennedy, a sympathiser of the Indian national movement, and both were killed in the attack.
