  • Current position (Bihar Economic Survey 2025-26): Bihar has 264 urban local bodies: 19 Nagar Nigams, 89 Nagar Parishads and 156 Nagar Panchayats.
  • The 19 Nagar Nigams: the original 12 (Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bihar Sharif, Arrah, Chhapra, Begusarai, Purnia, Katihar, Munger) plus 7 upgraded in 2021: Saharsa, Sasaram, Motihari, Bettiah, Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Madhubani.
  • The last urban body elections were held in two phases on 18 and 28 December 2022, the first with directly elected Mayors and Deputy Mayors. Their five-year term runs to about the end of 2027.
  • Older objective-set figures (for PYQs): 12 Nagar Nigams, 46 Nagar Parishads, 87 Nagar Panchayats, 3,193 wards, and elections last held in 2017.
