TopicPart 1 of 4

Subtopic 8.1: Universal Access & Sustainable Water Governance

If the sentence is about people drinking and the water still being there in 2030, the number is 6.

SDG 6 is clean water and sanitation. Its promise is universal access and sustainable management of water and sanitation by 2030: drinking water, toilets, wastewater, and the efficiency and scarcity problems of the resource itself. The Indian item asks which goal targets water availability for all and its permanent management up to 2030. The answer is SDG 6, not the climate goal and not the energy goal.

Neighbours get confused with it. SDG 7 is affordable and clean energy. SDG 8 is decent work and economic growth. SDG 9 is industry, innovation and infrastructure. A dam is infrastructure, but the goal that names water and sanitation is 6. An ocean target is SDG 14. If the question says availability for people and lasting management, stay on 6.

  1. Name SDG 6 and its 2030 horizon.
  2. Include drinking water, sanitation and sustainable management, not only pipes.
  3. Exclude SDG 7, 8 and 9, the usual neighbours.
  4. Exclude SDG 14, which is marine.
  5. In India, connect the goal to drinking-water and sanitation missions without claiming those missions are the goal itself.
Worked example. A village tap programme and a toilet programme both sit under SDG 6. A solar plant sits under SDG 7 even if the plant needs water to wash panels. A port sits nearer SDG 9 and SDG 14. The U.P. 2019 item’s phrase “water availability for all and its permanent management up to 2030” is the SDG 6 sentence. Mark (a) if that is how the options are lettered in the original, but learn the number, not only the letter.
Memory hook. People’s water and toilets: SDG 6. Energy is 7. Work is 8. Industry is 9. Oceans are 14.

SDG 6’s targets split access from the resource. Access is the household connection and the toilet. The resource targets are water-use efficiency, water quality, and ecosystems that supply water. A city can hit the access target by over-pumping an aquifer and fail the sustainability target. That tension is the further point, and it is why the goal says management, not only provision.

India’s groundwater dependence makes the tension sharp. The exam item does not ask for a groundwater statistic. It asks for the goal number.

Original notes

Subtopic 8.1: Universal Access & Sustainable Water Governance

Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) is explicitly defined as: \"Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.\"

Key dimensions of SDG 6 include:

  • Achieving universal and equitable access to safe, affordable drinking water.
  • Ending open defecation and providing adequate sanitation and hygiene for all, paying special attention to vulnerable groups.
  • Improving water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping, and halving the proportion of untreated wastewater.
  • Implementing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) across all administrative levels.
  • SDG 6 targets water availability, sanitation, and permanent water management by 2030.
  • SDG 7 relates to clean energy, SDG 8 to decent work, and SDG 9 to industry and infrastructure.

Original question

Question 14: Which of the following Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) will target water availability for all and its permanent management upto 2030 in India? [U.P.P.C.S. (Pre) 2019]

SDG-6 'Clean Water and Sanitation' specifically targets ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Added question

Universal access to water and sanitation by 2030 is:

SDG 6 is clean water and sanitation. SDG 7 is energy, 13 is climate, and 14 is marine life.
